William Bennett once said, "There are no menial jobs only menial attitudes,” (Moncur, 2005). People in the U.S. define themselves by the work they do when they leave their homes each day. According to the U.S. Census (UCB, 2005) about 64% of all Americans over the age of 16 are gainfully employed. In addition, the average household income in the U.S. in the year 2000 was about $42,000. At some point in your life, you are mostly likely going to hold down a job to support yourself and perhaps your family. Do you know how you're going to do that?

ASSURE Model lessons A - Analyze the Learners The series of lessons contained in this unit are designed for high school students who are looking into future career choices. The learners are typically students ranging in age from 15-18. The younger students are just exploring job opportunities and many of the older students have a temporary job and are looking to improve their situation. The students are a mixed group which includes gifted and special education students along with a few ESL students. S - State Objectives One of the goals of almost every school in the nation is to prepare the students for lifelong learning. Careers are a source of that lifelong learning and are important that students are guided to make proper choices. By including this in a high school environment students are able to explore some of the areas that they are interested in. Many times students investigate a career and change their mind because of what they find. Valuable time may be saved. All lessons within this career unit have objectives written within the lesson plan itself. The state and national standards are included where applicable. S - Select Materials, Media and Methods Materials used in this unit include handouts as well as literature that is available. Each individual lesson plan has various types of media that are listed in the lesson plans. Some of the sources are: Internet, films, calculators, cameras, recorders, and many more. U - Utilize Media and materials The Internet is a valuable source of information on careers. Tools of technology are valuable. They are used as a resource to the curriculum. R - Require learner participation Students will be actively engaged in participation. Careers selected will be totally up to the students, thus every class or group of individuals will have different topics depending on the desires of the class members. Topics will therefore be relevant to the students E - Evaluate and Revise Evaluation of how the students are doing will be carried out throughout the process. Rubrics are included in many of the lessons. Students will know at any time how they are doing by self evaluation. Teachers are able to evaluate progress of the students. Revisions can be made so that the students can see relevance to future jobs where you improve and do the best job possible. Any lesson plan needs to be evaluated and revised for future use after students have had a chance to participate.
